Settembre è una promessa

Settembre è un mese che per qualcuno può apparire triste, ma io lo considero molto bello, come un nuovo inizio, come una promessa, come una ripartenza dopo l'immobilismo dell'estate. Settembre è il mio mese preferito e l'ho inaugurato sfoggiando una nuovissima borsa shopper firmata Linda Damiani. Nelle mie solite esplorazioni in giro per la città sono entrata in una libreria che è un piccolo cosmo: Todo Modo oltre a libri selezionati dai due librai Pietro e Maddalena, ha nel suo retro un bar teatro accogliente dove apprezzare una vasta selezione di vini. Dopo ho continuato il mio giro verso l'Oltrarno, quartiere di Firenze famoso per le sue botteghe artigiane e per i modi schietti delle persone. Sicuramente una delle zone più vere di questa città. Ho apprezzato molto Manetti & Masini, un laboratorio di ceramiche dove riproducono anche vecchi manufatti della tradizione italiana. Ma il mio cuore è rimasto definitivamente conquistato da Castorina, una vera bottega artistica del legno dove si trovano piccoli e grandi capolavori della tecnica. Il cielo di settembre e la sua luce mi hanno fatto sentire una grande felicità per queste giornate lunghe, per questo senso di possibile che si apre davanti.

September is full of promises

Some may consider September a sad month, but to me it is wonderful, as a new beginning, a new promise, a considerable change after the summer. September is my favorite month in the year and in its honor I wore my new shopper bag by Linda Damiani. While I was strolling through the streets, I discovered a marvelous bookshop, Todo Modo, a whole world waits for you there. I met Pietro and Maddalena, who manage the bookshop and accurately choose the books; they also showed me the theatre and the bar that are in the back of the shop. There, I found a vast selection of wines and a special atmosphere. Then, I continued my walk on the other side of the river, Oltrarno, a neighborhood of Florence which is renowned for its artisan workshops and the straightforward character of its inhabitants. Surely, one of the most authentic neighborhoods of this city. I particularly appreciated Manetti & Masini, a ceramic workshop where the owners reproduce ancient handmade articles of the Italian tradition. I really fell in love with Castorina, a wood workshop where you can find real works of art. September sky and its light filled me with happiness thanks to its long days and a sense of possibility for the future.

Libreria Todo Mondo

Todo Modo è una libreria indipendente, enoteca-caffé, teatro, si propone di sostenere quella bibliodiversità che le grandi catene non possono garantire. Con una selezione di oltre 15000 titoli ben proporzionata tra narrativa e saggistica. Il nome dell’enoteca/café è Uqbar, in omaggio ad un celebre racconto di J.L.Borges. Da Uqbar ti aspettano Davide, enologo ed Hiroko, la chef. Ogni giorno sono proposti da Davide vini differenti in abbinamento ai piatti che Hiroko prepara dopo essere stata a fare la spesa nelle botteghe del quartiere.  Una grande sala lettura che all’occorrenza diventa luogo di incontri, rappresentazioni, proiezioni, concerti, laboratori, seminari.

Todo Modo is an independent bookshop, a café, a restaurant and a theatre. It aims to support books’ diversity that big franchises cannot offer with a selection of more than fifteen thousand books, both fiction and essays. The name of the restaurant-café is Uqbar, a homage to the famous Borges' short story. Here, Davide, the oenologist, and Hiroko, the chef, will welcome you. Every day, Davide proposes different wines to match the dishes Hiroko prepares after he has done his grocery shopping at the local market. The spacious reading room can host meetings, theatrical representations, film projections, concerts, workshops and seminars.

Michael Sherrill

Michael Sherrill è figlio di un inventore / motociclista e di una principessa guerriera / casalinga. Vive nelle montagne del Nord Carolina dal 1974. Come artista trae ispirazione dai materiali stessi, lavora principalmente con metallo, argilla e vetro. Al centro del suo interesse sta l'intersezione dove gli esseri umani e i materiali si incontrano. Nelle sue opere crea colore in movimento, proprio come i nostri occhi lo percepiscono in natura. Il suo lavoro è ispirato dalle osservazioni sul mondo naturale in cui il colore è sempre in movimento passando da una tonalità all'altra. Il lavoro di Michael è in diverse collezioni pubbliche.

Micheal Sherrill is the son of an inventor/motorcycle racer and warrior princess/homemaker. He has lived in the western North Carolina mountains since 1974. As an artist, he gets inspiration from the materials themselves, he works mainly with metal, clay and glass. At the heart of his interest, there is the intersection where humans and materials meet. In his works, he makes colors move, as our eyes perceive them in nature. They are inspired by the observation of the natural world, where color is always in movement from a shade to another. Michael's works are exhibited in several public collections.

Manetti & Masini

Le prime botteghe artigiane a Firenze risalgono al lontano 1200, ma è nel 1400 con Luca della Robbia che si affermano nel loro splendore. Caratteristiche delle botteghe erano la conduzione familiare, il tutto veniva tramandato da padre in figlio assieme ai segreti nati nella lunga esperienza. Nella lavorazione della ceramica si distingue l'attività del laboratorio artigiano Manetti & Masini che vanta un'esperienza di oltre 50 anni. Qui si riproducono antichi manufatti rendendoli fedeli agli originali in ogni dettaglio: dalle terre, agli smalti, all'invecchiamento. Tale precisione è stata acquisita grazie alla parallela attività di restauro che ci ha permesso di studiare approfonditamente le maioliche originali con particolare riguardo alle manifatture italiane.

Historically, the period of "botteghe artigiane" (artisanal workshops) started in Florence during the 13th century; then, during the 15th century, Luca della Robbia made them better known and guided them throughout their maximum splendor. A "bottega artigiana" is a special workshop where craftsmen create their objects, usually family-run, handed down from father to son. Each of our manufactured artistic articles is made with the biggest rigor, thanks to our 50-year-long experience. We reproduce ancient handmade articles, making them identical to the original ones, by using the same kind of clays and glazes, and by paying attention to their ageing. We can be so accurate thanks to the fact that we are also restorers. So, by restoring objects, we deepened our knowledge about the Italian original Majolicas and Ceramics Arts.
